Do you ignore brown envelopes? Especially the ones from HMRC? I could say open them all now, but actually, the one you should be looking out for is the Self Assessment Statement. HMRC sends them out around this time of year ready for the July payment on account. My last blog post was about payments on account, and the second payment is due by 31st July, so have a look at your statement and make sure there are no nasty surprises.

The statement also tells you how to pay – remember you need to include your Tax Reference so that HMRC can match your payment to your account. This is also known as your UTR and is the ten digit number at the top tight hand corner of the statement. For some reason, when paying, you need to add a K on the end.
